Browns vs. Cardinals -- First Half

Well, I quite frankly didn't think it was possible for the Browns to score on their first possession of the game and force the Cardinals to go 3 and out...but the reality is they did...WOW.  But aside from that it has been a typical half for the Browns.  Just a Phil Dawson field goal and a few punts, nothing special.  Seneca looked good on the first drive but outside of that he has been nothing spectacular.  What has been spectacular is Peyton Hillis.  Rushing for his first touchdown since Week 2 and currently has totaled 69 yards.  Another half like that out of Hillis and the Browns should be in good shape to win this ball game.

In the 2nd half look for the ball to continue to be fed to Hillis and Greg Little to drop at least 2 passes.  Seneca will throw a TD and Fitzgerald will get a score for the Cards.  Should add up to a Browns victory right?  That's what I would guess...but as in mid sentence Skelton hooks up with Roberts to get the Cardinals on the board.  Well, we'll have to see what happens in half number two.  Don't get your hopes up too high folks, after all it's the Browns.

2011 Gator Bowl: Ohio State vs Florida

Just a season ago, a match up between the Ohio State University and that team down south would have arguably been the match up of the season. A thriller between top tier teams of the Big Ten and SEC clashing in a rematch of the 2007 championship, which have left Buckeye fans with a sour taste in their mouths still strong after four years. Needless to say, this is a team Buckeye fans would conventionally be pumped up to face off against in a bowl game.

Unfortunately, this could not be any further from the case in 2011. After a historically abominable season by the Buckeyes, marked by an underachieving defense and inconsistent offense (not to mention "questionable" coaching strategies) and a season marked by mediocrity and disappointment by the Gators, two 6-6 football teams will be clashing in a highly unanticipated match up. The Bucks haven't seen a record matching this season's lowly mark since 1999, and have not suffered a worse record since 1988! The Gators have been historically up and down, but recently have been one of the most successful teams in college football.

Let's get down to the game shall we? A flip of a coin could predict this game as good as anyone. From week to week, we have no idea which Buckeye or Gator team will show up. If the combined effort shown against Wisconsin is also displayed against Florida, there is no reason why our home town heroes should not come out on top by 2 touchdowns. However, if we see the Buckeye team that showed up against Purdue, expect a result similar to the 2007 game. All in all, this game is a toss up.

The real question is, does this game even matter? Sure, pride is on the line, and a win is always better than a loss, but tickets are selling slower than an elderly women on the highway. Buckeye fans simply do not want to make the trip and who can blame them? This is a match up between two 6-6 football teams, and this season is already all but lost for Buckeye fans. We have the new regime with Urban Meyer coming in (basically the only headline surrounding this game), and are only looking forward. This game is as close to meaningless as it gets.

None the less, Buckeye pride is still at a high! We as Ohio State fans cannot accept losing consistently, and this is a chance to add another W to our already historic program. I am anticipating that this match up will receive a lot of TV viewers, as the unbiased fan will be drawn via the Urban Meyer story. As Buckeye fans, it is our responsibility to watch this game until the clock hits all zeros, whether we are playing for the championship or against Youngstown State.

Final Prediction: THE Ohio State University will come out on top, 31-24

"Take it to the bank."

Ohio: State of the Sports Address

Well, what is there for me to say? Browns...bad, Cavs...gonna be bad, Indians...were bad, Ohio State Football...bad, Blue Jackets...very bad. Will we ever catch a break here in Ohio? What's that you say, Ohio State Basketball?

The OSU Men's Basketball Team WILL win the National Championship this season. Although every year they seem to find a way to blow it in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8, this year is the year. Sullinger has played outstanding with the exception of the games he missed to back spasms and didn't play at all.

In addition to Sullinger, Craft has done his thing along with Senior, William Buford and Deshaun Thomas has started to come into his own as well. The Buckeyes will have a big road test tomorrow as they take on the Gamecocks of South Carolina.

As for now, GO Browns, Cavs, Indians, Blue Jackets and Buckeyes.

July 25, 2011

Well Cleveland fans, the NFL lockout is over and the Indians are only two games out of first place. I'd say it's a good day so far. Only time will tell if the Indians can stay in the pennant race.

The Tribe definitely needs to add a right handed bat to the arsenal and could use an outfielder at the trading deadline. With Sizemore and Choo both on the DL for an extended period of time the Indians could use a solid player to fill the void.

Personally I'd like to see BJ Upton. Yes I know he strikes out a lot, but with his speed and power he could help the Tribe out immediately with the absence of Sizemore and Choo.

By the Numbers
4 days til the Browns players can report to training camp
6 days til the MLB trade deadline

Going to be a good week.

Tribe Starts West Coast Swing -- Clutch

It appeared as if Tribe fans would see a loss to begin a six game West Coast road trip last night against the Oakland A's. Going into the 7th inning down 1-0, runs were at a premium.

But who are we kidding? This is an Indians team that had won their last three games in their last at bat, so why not make it four? The Indians did just that using an RBI single by Matt LaPorta in the 7th in to tie the game at one. In the top of the 9th the Indians used a clutch RBI single by Orlando Cabrera to take a 2-1 lead. His counterpart, Asdrubal Cabrera added some insurance with a two run single to stretch the Indians' lead to 4-2. Chris Perez closed the door in the bottom of the 9th, notching his eighth save in nine opportunities.

With the win the Indians improve to 20-8 on the season with a mark of 7-6 away from Progressive Field, and have won their last seven games overall.

The Indians take the field for round two of the series this evening at 10:05 EST looking to win the series. The Tribe sends Josh Tomlin (4-0) to the mound matching up against Oakland's Trevor Cahill (4-0).

Indians Make it 13 Straight

With a dramatic win in their final at bat once again the Tribe notched their 13th straight win at the Jake.

Behind a strong outing from Justin Masterson, despite surrendering a 2-0 lead early on, the Indians prevailed in their last at bat for the third game in a row. A 3-run 8th inning propelled the Tribe to a 5-3 lead. However, as we have seen in Cleveland for so long, our closers always have to make it interesting. And although he has been nearly perfect this season, Chris Perez made it interesting, allowing the Tigers to creep within 1 run run before recording the final out.

The Indians begin a west coast trip on Tuesday as they are in Oakland for a 3 game series before heading to LA for the second time this year to take on the Angels.

The Indians will return home next week to take on the Rays (5/10 - 5/12) and the Mariners (5/13 - 5/15). With the win the Indians improve to 19-8 on the season and 13-2 at the Jake.

The Magic is Back at the Jake

I'd have to say if you were a fan of any other team besides the Cleveland Indians coming into this season, you would not have expected the Tribe to be contenders. Even some Tribe fans were skeptical this season. But that's not to say the Indians weren't out to silence the doubters this season...and they have

18-8 to start the season and the most wins in club history for the month of April. Walk off wins against the division rival Tigers on consecutive nights. Stellar starting pitching and out of the pen. Hafner is leading the charge at the plate, Grady is healthy and the Tribe is rolling.

The Indians notched their 12th straight victory at home this evening and are looking to stretch the streak to 13 tomorrow afternoon when an undefeated Justin Masterson (5-0) toes the hill. Being a lifelong Tribe fan, all of 20 years, i vaguely remember the glory days of the 90's and am thrilled to see the Indians playing this well.

However, one thing I still don't understand. A team playing this well should have more fans in the seats. You better believe if I lived in Cleveland I would be a season ticket holder and at every game. I'll cut you some slack because it is just the end of April and isn't the dog days of summer quite yet. But all you fair weather fans better get on board with this team and get behind them win or lose.

Being a fan is about the ups and downs of your team, not just the ups. The Indians are red hot...so get on board!

2011 NFL Draft Analysis

Round 1 - Pick #21, Phil Taylor DT, Baylor
Taylor brings a big, mean dude that will be a space eater in the middle of Dick Jauron's 4-3 defense. Between he and Ahtyba Rubin that's 664 pounds of man. Granted they both won't be able to be on the field for every down but it's a start to installing the 4-3 defense in Cleveland.

Round 2 - Pick #37 Jabaal Sheard DE, Pittsburgh
If you're going to switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 you are going to need some quick pass rushers at the defense end position. Sheard will be exactly that for the Browns in 2011. He was the second fastest defensive end at the combine only behind Robert Quinn out of North Carolina. Quinn recorded 4.62, 40 yard dash time and Sheard clocked in at 4.68.

Round 2 - Pick #59 Greg Little WR, North Carolina
The Browns passed on drafting Julio Jones with the #6 pick overall and received a number of picks in return. With the 59th pick (from Atlanta) the Browns filled a need at the wide receiver position. Little brings a big, physical receiver for Colt McCoy to pass to. He missed all of the 2010 season at North Carolina due to suspension but impressed many teams during individual workouts. He will be the Browns #1 receiver and should have a legitimate impact in 2011.

Round 4 - Pick #102 Jordan Cameron TE, USC
Cameron has little experience on the football field, only accumulating 16 receptions for 126 yards and 1 touchdown last year at USC. Some people may scratch their heads at this pick but he is a freak athlete with a 37.5 inch vertical. He'll be able to learn behind veteran Ben Watson and emerging tight end Evan Moore. I wouldn't expect Cameron to contribute right away but maybe some time in the next few years for the Browns.

Round 4 - Pick #124 Owen Marecic FB, Stanford
With Lawrence Vickers figuring not to be a Brown in 2011, the team needed to fill his spot at fullback. Who better to select than Marecic out of Stanford. He is a big physical guy who should be able to fill the void left by Vickers right away.

Round 5 - Pick #137 Buster Skrine CB, Chattanooga
Skrine fills yet another need of the Browns at corner. He has lightning speed and should see the field in 2011. The Browns drafted Joe Haden with their first round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft to begin heading in the right direction. With the exception of Haden, the Browns struggled at corner last season. Skrine should be able to have an impact with a some work.

Round 6 - Pick #150 Jacob Pinkston OT, Pittsburgh
Who would have guessed the Browns continued to fill needs in the 6th round of the draft. He played left tackle at Pittsburgh and has had some injury concerns. You have to figure if he sees the field it will be at the right tackle position, no way this guy plays over 4 time All Pro Joe Thomas.

Round 7 - Pick #248 Eric Hagg S, Nebraska
Hagg figures to be a special teams contributor early on and could be a key reserve at the safety position for the Browns and possibly a starter somewhere down the road.

It's Been a While

The first place Cleveland Indians huh? Holding the top spot in the AL Central since April 8th, couldn't say I saw that one coming. The pitching has been dominant along with everyone at the plate (with the exception of Santana). He got a much needed day off this evening and needs to get things turned around. 14-8 to start the year, lets keep it going Tribe.

Then there is the man with the enormously huge biceps, the newest dude to earn the honor of being on the cover of the very popular Madden video game. Peyton Hillis shocked the country after a torrid run through ESPN's Madden Cover Vote.

And as if it couldn't get any better...the NFL Draft begins tomorrow night, broadcast live on ESPN at 8 PM. Unless the Browns draft a kicker with the 6th overall pick then I'd say their chances of screwing up are pretty low. They have a lot of needs and there are a lot of high quality players out there to fill those needs. At this point it's just a matter of what need they want to fill.

It's looking bright in Cleveland my friends. The Indians are surging, Peyton Hillis is on the cover of a popular video game and the NFL Draft begins tomorrow.

I don't know about you but I could get used to this.

Dunk Contest

As I sit here and watch the 2011 NBA Dunk Contest all I can say is wow...
These guys are putting on a show, and someone please explain to me who gave Blake Griffin a 9 on his first dunk!!! That is ridiculous, he's winning this puppy hands down.

21 and Counting...

If you were to look up "bad" in the dictionary you would find "The Cleveland Cavaliers."  After another defeat, this time at the hands of the Miami Heat (thanks again for leaving LeBrick) the Cavs notched their 21st consecutive loss, improving on the year to 8-40.  On the plus side, if we win out we would finish 2 games above .500 and with how bad the Eastern Conference is probably make the playoffs.

As for you LeBron, you wish us the best I hear?  The best would have been for you to stay in Cleveland, but no.  The face of the town is now Peyton Hillis and the Cleveland Browns...at 5-11.  You completely destroyed the economy and have left us with 3 sub .500 performing teams.  I would prefer if you didn't wish us the best my friend.  Cleveland fans have suffered for many years and it only seems fitting that you skipped town to "take your talents to South Beach."

Mark my words, I don't care how many titles you win, how many MVP's you win or even that you are from OHIO, don't come back!  We don't need to waste our time.

We have better things to worry about.  The Browns will go 12-4 in 2011 and will make the playoffs

Browns Add Another To Coaching Staff

Today the Cleveland Browns hired Mark Whipple as the team's new quarterbacks coach.  Whipple comes to the Browns after jobs with the Steelers from 2004-2006 and the Eagles from 2007-2008.  He was a quarterbacks coach and an offensive assistant respectively.  He was instrumental in the development of then rookie Ben Roethlsiberger during the the 2004 season, leading them to a 13-0 start.

Whipple has also served time in the college ranks as a head coach as well as offensive coordinator.  As the head coach at The University of Massachusetts, Brown and New Haven, Whipple amassed an overall record of 121-59.  He served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Miami in 2010.

Alex Mack-- MY GUY

For those of you who took on the pain of watching the lame and primarily uneventful 2011 NFL Pro Bowl from start to finish, you already know what this post is all about. For those of you who have lives and could not take on the pain, Browns Center Alex Mack caught a lateral pass during a busted play late in the 4th quarter and returned it 20-30 yards, while busting a few tackles, to rumble into the endzone for a touchdown. For a Browns fan, it was a night made and a boring evening turned into one well spent. Congrats to Alex and his Pro Bowl success, Browns fans around the world are proud of you! Another shout out goes to Joe Thomas, as he also played a great game.

The only negative regarding the Browns was that stud running back peyton Hillis was no where to be seen. He did not get a single carry, and was no where to be seen on the sidelines. I blame stupid Bill Belichick for this. I hate you Billy.

Pro Bowl

Honestly how many people out there sit down and watch the Pro Bowl from start to finish?  Anyone?  Exactly no one does, the players don't even want to be there.  They just want to start their offseason and get on with it, but no the NFL has a meaningless game in Hawaii every year.  This year it's a blow out, awesome, wasting airtime that no one wants to watch.  They even let the FOX sideline reporter call a play. Just goes to show how much this game actually means.  Maybe make it like the MLB and have the winner determine the conference who hosts the Super Bowl the following season.

As much as it pains me to say it, I have no life and HAVE watched this game from start to finish...

Pick 6, this one has been over for a while, 55-28, way to go AFC.  Better luck next year.

Buckeye Basketball

College basketball is at its peak here in Columbus, as the Buckeyes find them selves with the nation's top ranking, as well as a 19-0 record. They are playing as a team, and even when the games become closer than desired, they have yet to choke in the end. Ohio State is coming off a recent demoralization of Iowa, and look to keep the winning streak going Saturday at Illinois. In my opinion, this will have been the Buckeyes biggest test up to date, as Illinois is a tough team, especially in such a hostile playing environment. I would not be suprised to see Ohio State lose this game, simply because, in college basketball, it is virtually impossible to run the table. The Bukeyes talent wise are above the Illini, but this should be a difficult game regardless. I give this match up a "must see" rating, as it should attract many television sets in and around Columbus.

All in all, the Buckeyes are good, real good. None of their players, at the time being, are Citgo worthy, and they seem to be playing as a team as good as any other program in all of college basketball. Look for them to finish in the top 5 in the country this season, and earn a #1 seed for the tourny. Expect the Buckeyes to go deep, and for a very entertaining remainder of the college basketball season. I'm out, Go Bucks!

3 Browns Players Receive Postseason Accolades

Joe Thomas along with rookies Joe Haden and TJ Ward were honored, for their work on the field this season, by Pro Football Weekly and the Professional Football Writers of America on Monday.

Indians Offseason Update

The Indians reached deals today with the following players to avoid arbitration:

Shin-Soo Choo
Chris Perez
Rafael Perez
Asdrubal Cabrera

I guess you could say these are some of the "key" players for the Tribe for the 2011 season.  But with the direction that this club is headed, don't count on it.  Sizemore and Santana are progressing nicely in their respective rehab processes and figure to be ready for or during Spring Training.

We all remember the glory days of the 90's...well glory until the Fall Classic, and then it was everything but glory.  Don't be surprised if we end up with a similar curse to that of the Chicago Cubs.  What does this mean Tribe fans?

In another 40 years we will have equaled the current World Series drought held by the Cubs of 102 years...

And they haven't won one yet so no promises on the Indians breaking their curse either.

62 years and counting my friends...

GO TRIBE!

NFL Conference Championships: AFC

Well here we are, finally time for the Super Bowl match up to be decided! Much shake up has already occurred in this year's NFL playoffs, as both conference champions from last season were knocked out during the wild card round this season. Last year's suprise team, the New York Jets, have proven that their playoff success is no fluke, after returning to the championship game to pick up where they left off. Not to mention, their recent victory over New England was nothing short of perfection. The fiesty Jets will fight for their Super Bowl spot in the hostile city of Pittsburgh, against the hated Steelers.

Pittsburgh was not expected to be as successful this year as in previous seasons, primarily with the issues regarding the suspension of their star quarterback..cough rapist..cough. Unfortunately, their recent trend of dominance did not stop, as they posted an impressive win against Baltimore at home, as well as a phenominal 2010 regular season. This heated matchup will be close, no question about it. However, my wisdom brings me the answer to who the victor shall be: The New York Jets. Take it to the bank.

The Jets not only have a strong defense, but they are very balanced on offense. Mark Sanchez has evolved into one of the better passers in the league, and their receivers get the job done (as much as it pains me to say, Braylon Edwards). The addition of LT this year also bolstered their running game. I look for this Jets offense to do what is needed to win against an always tough Pittsburgh D. Rex Ryan has this team coached well, and they seem to have all the momentum heading into championship week. Now, an explosive performance from Big Ben and Mendenhall could likely produce a differing outcome, but but facts and my always correct guy tell me that the AFC rep for the Super Bowl has New York written all over it.

Final Score: 20-17 Jets. I'm calling for an overall well played game on both sides, but a late turnover will likely be the difference. I would say good luck to both teams, but being a loyal fan of the Cleveland Browns, that would just be a flat out lie. Fellow Clevelanders and football fans alike, Jets baby! No question to it!

NFL Conference Championships: NFC

Here we take a moment to step aside and analyze the NFC Championship Game.

The Green Bay Packers and The Chicago Bears (Da Bears)

Green Bay comes in hot, riding the right arm of Aaron Rodgers.  You can't do much better as a quarterback than Rodgers did against the Falcons on Saturday.  Take a look at this stat line:

31/36 passing, 366 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT

Leading the Packers to a 48-21 rout of the Atlanta Falcons.

Da Bears, will make for an interesting divisional matchup in the NFC title game.  Coming off a narrow 7 point win over the lowly Seahawks.  Who in my opinion should not have been in the playoffs to begin with.  7-9 are you kidding me?  Sure they won their division but there were better teams in the NFC than the Seattle Seahawks.  The NFL needs to revise their playoff setup in the coming years.

That doesn't matter anymore because they lost, so back to Da Bears.

The Bears defense will be critical in this game.  Stopping Aaron Rodgers will be key, if they can't do that...then forget it, the Packers are headed to Indy.

Look for a close game, that will ultimately end up in a win for the Packers.

Final Score: 27-17

"Take it to the bank."

New Guy In Town

Just one day after speculation that the Browns had a new head man in Cleveland, Pat Shurmur was officially named the head coach.

Shurmur comes to the Browns from the St. Louis Rams and is the 13th full time head coach in franchise history.  He had a successful 2010 campaign with the development of the #1 overall draft pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, Sam Bradford.  Browns President, Mike Holmgren hired Shurmur in hopes that he can do the same for Colt McCoy.

Shurmur has coached in the NFL since 1999 with two teams, the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2008 and the St. Louis Rams from 2009-2010.  He also spent years as a coach in the college ranks with Michigan State and Stanford University.

The task that lies ahead for Shurmur is a daunting one and will not be easy.  If he can get the Browns turned around Holmgren will look like a genius, however, if it's more of the same losing football, people might begin to question the judgement of The Big Walrus.

Shurmur has ties to Holmgren and was the Browns first choice when Eric Mangini was relieved of his duties following an embarrassing loss to divisional rival Pittsburgh Steelers.  Shurmur's uncle Fritz Shurmur was a coach under Holmgren when he was the head coach for the Green Bay Packers.

Needless to say, it is time for Shurmur and the Browns organization to get to work for 2011.  The draft will be here before you know it and a solid draft will be the first step to getting the Browns headed in the right direction.

Cavaliers Basketball

This post could be summarized in one word..BAD. This franchise has gone from the best team in the NBA a season ago to the worst. The Cavaliers are coming off of their worst loss in franchise history to the Lakers, 112-57. The Cavs were held to 25 points in the first half, and shot a field goal percentage lower than any other team in Cavalier history. The starting lineup is abundant with no names; a month ago many of the players on this curerent team had never even been heard of. Watching this Cavaliers team is like watching a a mid major college team, and that is being generous.

All in all, what else should we have expected? Jamison is old, Mo is not an all star. The overall talent level is abismal. This past off season, the Cavs lost the majority of their skilled players; Shaq, LeJerk, our boy Delonte, and big Z. Anderson Varejao has also been lost for the remainder of the season due to an ankle injury. The NBA is clearly corrupted, as teams in the gutter are destined to remain in their lowly position.

Where do the Cavs go from here? If the ping pong balls go in our favor, who should we expect to select with the first overall pick in the NBA draft this summer? Looking ahead, the franchise is at risk if this team continues in this downward trend.

The Right Guy?

Rumor has it that Pat Shurmur will be next in charge for the Cleveland Browns:

Cleveland Browns Offseason: 2011

After another disappointing 5-11 season the Browns are looking for help in the 2011 offseason.  Some may say "help" is an understatement.  The Browns need another good draft in April and need to break the Cleveland curse.  "The Drive", "The Fumble", Jose Mesa, dare I say it LeB**n Ja*es...

The list goes on and on.  All the loyal Cleveland fans want is a championship...just ONE.

Before we consider the 2011 NFL Draft let's reflect on 2010.  What we learned:
- Peyton Hillis was a monster at the beginning of the season, until everyone in the league figured out he likes to hurdle.  Poor ball security and injuries caused Hillis to limp to the finish line but with a good offseason expect a solid season from him in 2011

- Colt McCoy is the starter?  Not so fast, he did lead the Browns to wins over the Patriots and Saints but again another poor finish leaves some questions at quarterback.  He seems like he could be the Browns quarterback of the future, but we'll see how he handles his first offseason in the NFL before we make any decisions on that one.

- Joe Haden was one of the top rookies during the 2010 campaign in the NFL.  6 interceptions as a rookie as the 7th overall pick in the 2010 Draft.  It won't be too long before there is another island besides Revis Island out in the NFL shut-down corner ocean!

2011 Draft:  The Browns NEED a go to receiver for whoever the starting quarterback ends up being.  A guy in the likes of AJ Green or Julio Jones that can stretch the defense and pose a deep threat.  Another NEED is defensive line help, a solid pass rusher will help solidify the Browns D Line.

BCS National Championship

The high flying, hard hitting, score runner upping OREGON DUCKS.  Who cares if they run up the score, a W is a W in the world of sports my friends, no matter how you slice it.  Sure Auburn has got the Heisman Trophy winner, but look at how previous winners have faired in championship games...not too hot, a spectacular 2-6 record to show for.  Cam Newton is the ninth winner of the award to also play for the national title in the same season.

College football needs a change of pace, the SEC has won 6 of 12 BCS National Championship Games.  Come on now, I think it's time for them to share.  The Ducks are more than willing to take the reigns and knock the SEC off their pedestal.

Go Ducks my friends, Go Ducks!
